Latest iTunes Phone rundown

There are numerous sources of (mis)information on the web right now about the rumored iTunes phone. Here’s what Mac ‘n’ Cell knows:

  • The recent iTunes 4.9 upgrade installs a file titled “iTunesPhoneDriver.pkg” into your /Library/Receipts folder. This package is independent of the iTunes installer and seems to install a driver for those systems running 10.2.8. If nothing else, this driver name seems to suggest that either someone at Apple mislabeled a driver, or there will be some connection between iTunes and phones.

  • Engadget has posted another, more recent story about a yet-to-be-introduced Motorola E790, which looked very much like a white version of the E398. The screen shots show what appears to be an iTunes mobile interface. It’s not clear whether the folks over at Engadget had possession of the phone itself, or these were taken by someone else and submitted. Engadget did not show any photos or screen shots of connecting the phone to iTunes.

  • A screen capture video has surfaced here showing a screen capture of mobile phone syncing with iTunes. The video shows preference screens in French with adjustments for memory allocations, much like on the iPod Shuffle preferences. The video does not show the phone being attached to a computer, however, only an small icon in iTunes.

  • Mac ‘n’ Cell has tested a number of US and European phones with iTunes 4.9 both via usb cable and bluetooth connections, but have not been able to get the rumored iTunes phone sync to work. Those phones tested with transflash: E398, E1000, C635. Those without transflash: V551, V3 RAZR. We will have a full review of the above phones and how they connect to your Mac very soon.
