Apple iPhone

Better than anyone could have imagined—all in one device. Let’s look at some of the details and ask the question—if this is the last phone you’ll ever buy, do you need MacnCell?

Here’s what we know regarding the phone capabilities:

  • Cingular is US Parter
  • GSM / EDGE
  • WiFi and Bluetooth
  • SMS conversations in iChat-like format
  • Visual voicemail—answering machine like technology where all the messages and their contact info are listed on the phone, and can be selected to playback out of order—not sequentially like traditional voicemail. Those who use VOIP will be familiar with this. Not sure yet, but there is probably some “special sauce” that allows the phone to communicate with the voicemail service.
  • Email: POP/IMAP/Push (Blackberry-like mail)—Free Yahoo! Accounts with every Apple iPhone
  • Full HTML Safari web browser
  • Runs a portable version of Mac OS X.

Other device notables:

  • Multi-touch screen with onscreen keyboard
  • iPhoto, iTunes, Contacts, Calendar, Todo lists, Widgets
  • Bluetooth Headset
  • 4GB and 8GB
  • 5 hour battery life, 16h just playing music.

$499 for 4GB, 8GB for $599. Available in June 2007.

Knowing that everyone (including me!) is going to be buying this device, and that it will work seamlessly with your Mac, will there be a need for MacnCell?

Bright future or…

After being wow’d by Steve’s keynote, I’ve had some time to think about the iPhone and while I’m impressed, I’m not sold yet. Will it do VoIP? And not Skype or some other propriatary form, rather an open format like SIP? And IF it does, will it be an integrated solution like on my Nokia E61? That alone could make or break the deal for me.

What about iChat or another IM program? Office apps? Will it be possible for 3rd party apps to be installed? VNC or Remote Desktop? Alarmclock, currency converter, and other such common Smartphone apps? The list could go on…

More questions than answers right now, and that is why I think that Mac ‘n Cell still has a valuable role to play in these exciting times!

Keep up the good work!
Dave

iPhone apps

I think that currency converter, tip calculator, alarm clock, and a lot of these types of apps will be widget-based. I’d like to see if we can just click and drag our OS-X widgets over to the phone, or if there are going to be more “iPhone-centric” widgets that we’ll use. My contract with Verizon is up soon, so I’ll be ready for a new phone in June…

I once over heard a former apple employee joke about this and why the iphone does not have buttons. Because Steve Job never diales anyone. He just has his assistant on speed dial that connects his calls…

dont know how much truth there is in the joke but still..

The iPhone name was a bad choice anyways.

If they chose to call their computers ‘Mac’ and their music player ‘iPod’, why on earth are they calling their phone ‘phone’?

Even Microsoft has learned from this with the Zune. Apple should come up with a more imaginative name IMHO

I like the iPhone multi-touch technology for easy navigation. This will be the next PDA generation. Get iPhone Converter http://www.iphoneconverter.com/
