Some technical details from AT&T's iPhone Sales Training Workbook
An iPhone sales training workbook for AT&T store employees was leaked to the Internet over the weekend. From it, we can see some deals were struck between Apple and AT&T.
You can see more of the scans of the pages in the workbook from this MacRumors post. Clearly some deals have been between make by Apple and AT&T as to what network features will be available. Some work in AT&T’s advantage while others don’t:
Features that Pad AT&T’s Pocket:
-
Messaging: Phone will use SMS only, over Instant Messaging. Generally, Cingular/AT&T’s SMS service fees (all-you-can-eat or otherwise) have been apart from their Internet Service. Although I don’t yet know the specifics of the service plans to be offered with the iPhone, limiting the feature-set to texting-only when the phone is running Mac OS X feels very service-based-crippleware to me. I wonder how long it will take IM-over-the-web services like Meebo to provide an iPhone specific website to allow users to get their IM fix? However, I’m betting this doesn’t preclude the use of AIM to SMS feature, so that computer users can text their SMS friends for free.
-
Mail: Yahoo! Push Email requires AT&T data plan. I wonder when we’re going to find out more about this Yahoo! Push Mail? I believe previously it was only available to Palm devices on the Sprint network. This new service must have the folks at RIM and Microsoft concerned, as Yahoo! reportedly has the largest email subscriber base on the Internet.
Features that Disadvantage AT&T:
-
AT&T based media: No AT&T Music Folder, no Media Mall for ringtone or answertone downloads, no MEdia Net, MobiTV, or Cellular Video.
-
Widget Info: iPhone stock and weather widgets pull information from the Internet, not MEdia Net.
-
Maps: Doesn’t use MEdia Net for location-based services, also won’t support TeleNav solutions offered on other AT&T devices.
A service to both AT&T and Apple will be a unified management of the iPhone subscriber’s account within iTunes. If anyone’s used Cingular’s webpage to manage accounts, I’m betting we’ll have some additional functionality—maybe even the ability to listen to voicemails from the iTunes interface (just a guess, since this is really more of a web-based feature than a network one).
